Plan B (LEVONORGESTREL) tablets 0.75mg emergency contraception

What Plan B® is

  • Plan B® is the only FDA-approved emergency contraceptive currently available, composed of two (levonorgestrel, 0.75 mg) progestin-only tablets. It reduces the chance of pregnancy by up to 89% when taken as directed within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected intercourse, contraceptive failure, or sexual assault.1 However, Plan B® is more effective the sooner it's taken, especially within the first 24 hours.1 The first tablet should be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse, and the second tablet 12 hours later.

  • Plan B® is available behind the counter at pharmacies and sold under the supervision of pharmacy staff. A prescription is needed only for women under 17 and younger.

  • Plan B® is proven to have a better safety profile than the Yuzpe regimen (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol).1

  • Women may experience contraceptive failure and clinicians can play a pivotal role in ensuring that women have accurate information about how to access and use emergency contraception.11

What Plan® B isn't

  • Plan B® isn't RU-486 (the abortion pill); Plan B® will not affect an existing pregnancy.

  • Plan B® isn't a substitute for a routine contraception method; it should not be used that way, because it is not as effective as other methods of birth control used consistently and correctly.
